Rod vs. Shield: Choosing the Right Tools and Sizes for a Perfect Lash Lift - 30 Sep 2024

One of the most common questions we receive from lash lift students is “how do I choose the correct rod or shield for my clients?”. Getting this right is key to achieving the best lash lift results. The main difference between the two is that the rod will provide a C curvature and the shield will provide an L curl.

As you can see in the below images, the flex rod provides a slightly more natural curled result, whereas the flex shield offers a more dramatic lift. Choosing between a rod or a shield for your client ultimately depends on your client’s preferences, so conducting a thorough consultation is important.

In certain situations, a rod or shield may be more desirable based on the client’s eye shape. For example:

Deep-set eyes: For clients with deep-set eyes, rods are often the better choice. The goal is to lift the lashes outward from the root without letting them touch the brow bone (imagine how uncomfortable that would feel!). In this case, a rod helps create space between the lashes and brow. For some clients, a larger rod size can even provide extra lift and comfort.

Rounded eyes: Remember, shields open eyes even wider. Using a rod is often a more complimentary choice for this eye shape for a slightly more natural look.

Choosing The Correct Rod Or Shield Size

Okay, now that you have chosen a rod or a shield for your client… It’s time to pick a size! Selecting the right size rod or shield is a crucial aspect of achieving optimal results in lash lifts for your clients. Here are the basic fundamentals we use to choose the correct size:

Measure the Lashes: Place the selected rod or shield onto the client’s eyelid. Use your precision lifting tool to lift the lashes onto the rod or shield.

Check the Lash Placement: The lashes should extend past the halfway point (the apex) of the rod or shield, ideally reaching about ¾ of the way up. This ensures the perfect curl.

Note: Inner corner lashes are typically shorter, so let the majority of the lash line guide your choice. As long as most lashes cross the halfway point, you’ll achieve a well-formed curl.

Lash Hack!

Did you know our tree tool includes a measuring guide? It features four markers on the side, each representing a different size. To measure your client’s lashes, gently place the tree tool under the lash line to determine the right rod or shield size. This is a great tool for beginners as it provides a nice starting point!
